Education

SwimThe Marine Discovery Centre has just celebrated 10 year of running primary school excursion programs, teaching over 20,000 children about the marine environment since 2002.

"After 30 years of teaching I have found at long last the best excursion ever" – Ms Louise Gibson, Clovelly Public School YK 2011

Each class booking receives a free DVD on the marine life of Sydney, for pre-excursion activities

Hands-on excursions really bring units of work to life for students.
Our Marine Biologist Guides will ensure your class not only achieves the syllabus outcomes but also has a fun day full of learning!
The guided Rockpool Discovery Tours are the highlight - a hands-on investigation of the amazing marine life that lives on the rockplatforms around Sydney. Discover the structure, function and amazing adaptations of these local marine organisms; investigate properties of seawater using Hydrometers; discover our Aboriginal heritage through rock engravings and then link it all together by looking at man’s impact on our local environments through fun and education games on the beach.
This is combined with a visit to the Underwater Bondi Experience, which is a walk-through simulation of a 2,000 dive tour around Bondi Bay using a combination of real fish (including baby sharks) in large camouflaged aquaria that are set into the world’s first re-creation of an actual dive site; together with a virtual reality dive sequence to transport you out there and an amazing 11 minute filmic tour around Bondi Bay to complete the journey. The very realistic Stormwater Drain at the end provides a vivid call to action; perfect for inspiring young minds with motivating “MDC Missions” – like “Have a Plastic Free Day!”

*Bookings are essential & strictly limited. Minimum class size 20 students
**Cost (ExGST): $12:00 pp in Term 1 and $11:00pp in Terms 2&3 and $12:50 pp in Term 4  (Teachers and Adult Helpers FREE)
These fun-filled excursions are delivered with the generous assistance of our partners Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick Councils who offer 40% discounts for their schools (Wav & Wooll) and 25% (Ran).

These comprehensive, fun-filled excursions ideally complement Units of Work focusing on Outcomes from the Science & Technology Syllabus Strands, Living Things and Earth and its Surroundings; in addition to HSIE Syllabus Strands Environments and Change and Continuity (among others); and PDHPE Safe Living Outcomes; as well as the Environmental Education Policy for Schools all in a highly engaging and entertaining day out at The Beach.
